about

On a hill above the no-stoplight town of Rangely, Colorado, there’s a place where the intimacy of a house show meets the divine reverb you might hear in a cathedral or a canyon. In this case, it’s a 65-foot tall, 40-foot wide decommissioned steel water tank converted into an artist space.

‘RANGELY,’ the first full length from Front Range band Creekbed, was recorded live at the Tank on a warm morning in June 2022. The release pulls focus on the vocal interplay and harmonies of Rachel Gramig and Jesse Wooten, while the tidal swells of pedal steel give buoyancy to these tunes. The record draws inspiration from Dinosaur National Monument – located some 20 miles north of Rangely – where the singers each worked a season in the backcountry, constructing trails and stone pathways and measuring the health of the rangeland.

Gramig and Wooten are the front-folx of Creekbed. This new record invites the listener to join them for the long haul, as these songs evoke travel through the West: Float down the canyons of Utah and Colorado (Desert Cicada), run and romp wildeyed through the cedars and baldcypress of the Texas hill country (Bright Eyed Coyote; B.O.Y.S.; Cedar Fever Spirit Lover) and soak in the hot springs and heartache of the San Luis Valley (Valley View).

These songs were recorded on a warm morning in early June for an audience of one (thank you, Emily). Pedal steel was graciously overdubbed by Hamilton Belk, somewhere in the woods of Maine.

Album closer "Traffic" carries hope and resignation, seeking balance between a job in the city and the need for a long walk in the woods to refill hearts and reclaim the self. Listening to the trailing echoes of the final notes of "Here's Hoping," that goal seems almost within reach.
